Navy Medicine's Health and Wellness Programs promote a healthy and fit force with improved military readiness. Most of the top ten causes of deaths in the United States are the result of lifestyle behaviors that can be changed. Tobacco Use & Cessation
Tobacco use is the number one preventable cause of death and illness, and the military remains a high consumer of tobacco products. The Health Promotion program is using public health strategies to address the "tobacco problem." The current approach to addressing tobacco includes- understanding the full extent of the issues, identifying risk and protective factors, developing and examining interventions, and evaluating the effectiveness of tobacco programs.
Nutrition
Nutrition is the foundation upon which total physical and emotional well being and readiness is based. The focus of the Navy Nutrition program is to improve the nutritional fitness of our active duty individuals and to implement system and environmental changes that will enhance a healthy lifestyle. Sports nutrition, meal planning, recipes (including microwave ideas), and dietary supplements are only a few of the resources available.
Drug and Alcohol Abuse Prevention
Many people view drug and alcohol abuse as strictly a social problem. Many people believe that users should be able to stop taking drugs and abusing alcohol if they are willing to change their behavior. Drug use and alcohol abuse by Navy members can seriously damage their physical and mental health, jeopardize their safety and the safety others, and can lead to criminal prosecution and discharge under less than honorable conditions.
Injury Prevention
Primary goals of the NEHC Injury Prevention Program include decreasing the magnitude, incidence and severity of unintentional injury. Resources include prevention tips to reduce sports injuries, current research, and injury prevention initiatives in the USN.
Physical Fitness
Improving readiness is a priority for the Department of the Navy (DoN). ShipShape: BUMED Approved Weight Management Program
The ShipShape Program is the Bureau of Medicine and Surgery (BUMED)-approved weight management program, coordinated by the Health Promotion Department at the local Navy Medical Treatment Facilities (MTFs). The program was developed and made available at the local MTF level to increase accessibility of a weight management program for Active Duty Sailors and Marines needing assistance in maintaining Physical Readiness Standards.

Today's topic from the NKO is the Performance- Performance Vector. Here are some of the highlights that I gathered up from the NKO Performance-- Performance Vector page.

In section 2, I have gleaned out "HPFD- Human Performance Feedback and Development", please read the following for what HPFD means:

What is HPFD?
· HPFD is the Human Performance Feedback and Development web based “counseling” tool and developmental methodology. It is designed to replace the current NAVFIT 98 "counseling" process throughout the entire Navy. Fleet Sailors, not Headquarters, designed the performance standards.
· It is designed to clearly communicate what observable workplace behaviors the Fleet wants to develop for both supervisors and non-supervisors.
· Key features include: 1) shifting from a calendar driven system based on paygrade, to an event driven system, i.e. report on board begins the developmental cycle, 2) conducting quarterly sessions during the first year at each new duty station, 3) Formal HPFD sessions are part of a Sailor's e-performance record for better continuity in personal and professional development and viewable by permission only, and 4) provide Sailors with a clear understanding of how their work and personal development fit with the Navy's mission.

How will it help Sailors?
· The HPFD describes what behaviors Fleet focus groups stated are key to high perfirming supervisors and non-supervisors. It benefits Sailors in that expectations are clearly defined in behavioral terms, not vague traits.
· HPFD provides the tools to establish an individual developmental plan whether the Sailor intends to stay only a few years or thirty years. It also provides the resources for such plans.
· HPFD also provides the tools for individual Sailors to meet personal and professional short-term goals by enhancing the relationship between the Sailor and their supervisors. It is the means by which Sailors can receive non-punitive feedback about their performance and ways to improve their performance.

Q: What is a 5VM?
A: The 5VM is a "Snap Shot" of your career. It is created using input from the 5 vectors that reflect your career. The vectors are broken up into five categories: your Professional Development, Personal Development, Certifications & Qualification, Leadership Development, and follows up with Performance (e.g. HPFD & Performance Evals). The 5VM "Snap Shot" applies weights (or value) to all data contained in each vector and returns a "Human Capital Index (HCI)" number that shows how you rate against your peers (i.e. a BM2 is compared to all BM2's across the Navy).

Q: Where does HPFD fit into my 5VM?
A: HPFD falls under the "Performance Vector" portion of your 5VM. HPFD is a "performance progress report" that allows you to make mid-term correction/performance enhancements that ultimately helps you to perform better at your job and allows you to identify education/training opportunities to prepare you to assume positions of greater responsibility.

1999-2001 United Nations mission in Sierra Leone: Medical Deployment and Experiences Indian troops
participated in the United Nations Mission in Sierra Leone (UNAMSIL), as part of peacekeeping force from
Dec 1999 to Feb 2001. The IAF contributed a full-fledged, self-contained contingent consisting of 212
personnel (including 33 aircrew) and 8 helicopters (4 Chetak, 4 Mi-8 and 3 Mi-35 gunships). An Aviation
Medicine specialist accompanied this contingent and gained useful experiences in the medical

8. You can now begin the course by clicking on the LAUNCH button. This will take you to the hyperlink that will get you to view the lesson and test . You can enroll in all lessons and then go back later to "My Enrollment" to do the lessons at a later time. Once you have successfully completed a course, go to "My Transcripts" click on the Certificate button to print your Certificate of Completion.
Please be advise you need to achieve at least an 80% on a particular GMT topic, the individual can print out the completion certificate for the topic, please make a copy and give to our office and we will make sure it gets into your training folder.
